They could see the sign slowly rotating in the distance, high in the air. They continued walking across the Playa, neither really aware they were now holding hands again. Persephone marveled at the sheer size and diversity of Burning Man. Even were I here a month, I do not think I could take in even a tenth. That time-out-of-mind feeling special to Burning Man was like nothing she had ever experienced. The simple freedom to be whoever you wanted to be, with no judgment, no pressure, cleaning up after yourself as natural as breathing, it was all so refreshing, so startling and it was something that called to her very soul. So many like-minded people interacting frictionlessly – this was the way the mechanism of the world was actually meant to work.

She was appreciating Saxon more with every moment. He was very good company. He had a real sense of timing around a woman, when to speak but more importantly, when to remain silent. He also had a deliciously wicked sense of humor. She could hardly wait to bed him and she knew he was just as attracted to her. A small part of her felt bad about how this might affect Juliette but truly, it was just that. A small part. Persephone lived in the Now.

They finally arrived and as if by some unspoken agreement, stopped before the Dome at a distance such that it filled their entire field of view. They drank in the spectacle of what was before them.

The rotating THUNDERDOME sign sat atop a thirty foot tall geodesic hemisphere made of tubular steel lattice. They could not see what was going on inside because the entire structure was covered in bodies – people – all types, all sizes, very much a demographic cross-section of Burning Man itself. Nearly all of them were wasted out of their minds, clutching bottles, pipes and spliffs, screaming and yelling like it was the last day before the comet hit.

Saxon looked at Persephone, the edge light from the THUNDERDOME sign carving his features from the night.

“This, you are really going to enjoy,” he said.

He turned to go.

“Wait.”

She pulled him into a kiss.

She had longed to do this again since she’d first felt his lips on hers. He kissed her back, deep and hungry, each now running their hands over the other’s body, delighting, lingering, caressing, before finally breaking. They looked into each other’s eyes and said nothing. Then, as if by some unspoken signal, they ran like children up to the Dome. They began to climb, easily maneuvering past the bodies of the various Burner-intoxicants clinging to the steel. They’d made it two thirds of the way up when Saxon halted. He clambered over to where she was and pointed down.

Inside the Dome, two tech-bros faced each other, both shirtless, both out of shape. Each appeared attached to some sort of harness and held what looked like a heavily padded baseball bat. Between them stood a girl in a black PVC corset, fishnet stockings and a dark leather duster. She had long tangled auburn hair and carried an ornate staff.

The crowd clinging to the Dome suddenly grew quiet.

“You know the rules!” the Mistress of the Dome shouted. “We say fight, you FIGHT! Two of them enter, only one leaves! Two of them enter, only one leaves!”

The crowd eagerly picked up the chant.

“TWO OF THEM ENTER, ONLY ONE LEAVES!”

“TWO OF THEM ENTER, ONLY ONE LEAVES!”

Several PVC and leather-clad boys and girls – the Desert Rats – emerged from the shadows and pulled the two tech-bros apart. They dragged them to the perimeter of the Dome and lifted them, Persephone finally understanding the harnesses were attached to bungee cords so the two combatants could spring and bounce all over the interior of the Dome.

She grinned at Saxon and put her arm around him for a heartfelt squeeze.

The Mistress of the Dome then swept her staff down and the two combatants were released. They slammed together like a fat whore’s thighs and started flailing away at each other, no technique, no power, just a lot of sweating and grunting. The contest, if it could be called that, quickly ended as both tech-bros were too gassed to continue past the first mêlée. Perhaps micro-dosing had not been such a good idea. Boos and garbage rained down, followed by some errant driblets of urine. The crowd was not pleased.

The Mistress returned to the center.

“That was a fucking DISGRACE! This is THUNDER DOME you shriveled scrotes! Not OLD FOLKS HOME! Get them out of here!”

The Desert Rats quickly sprang to the fore and stripped the two tech-bros of their harnesses. They were then shoved towards the exit and summarily ejected. When one of them protested, he was helped along by a swift kick in the ass that raised a satisfying cloud of playa dust from the seat of his overpriced camo. The crowd cheered.

“NO MORE LOSERS! The next performance like that is going to see a beating you won’t soon recover from! NOW, are there any REAL men out there? Any REAL women?”

“I ACCEPT YOUR CHALLENGE!” Persephone yelled at the top of her lungs.

“Then GET YOUR ASS DOWN HERE!”

Saxon looked at Persephone, a question in his eyes.

“Don’t worry. I’ll be alright.”

“But you don’t know who you’re going to be up against.”

“It doesn’t matter.” She smiled as a shark might. “After I win, I challenge you!”

“You’re on!”

They quickly clambered down and made their way to the entrance.

“Make way! Make way!” the Mistress shouted, “Get the fuck out of the way! Let him through, ya scurvy buggers!”

Persephone made her way into the Dome. Two Desert Rats held up crossed spears, barring Saxon from following her.

The Mistress pointed her staff at him. “You’re next!”

Persephone stepped forward. Up close, the Mistress was considerably younger than she had first appeared from up top. But what she lacked in years she more than made up for with force of personality. She circled the other girl, tapping Persephone’s wings with her staff.

“Those’ll have to go. But don’t worry. I’ll keep’em safe.”

Persephone took off the wings and handed them to another of the THUNDERDOME crew, who appeared with the silent ubiquity of a ball boy at a tennis match.

“Don’t steal’em,” the Mistress admonished. “Strap her in!”

“Wait!” Persephone bent and began taking off her shoes, the better to feel the packed desert earth between her toes.

“You sure?” asked the Mistress.

“I’m sure. Who am I fighting?”

The Mistress pointed her staff. “Marrow.”

Across the Dome, a youth was already in harness. He was shave-headed and wiry, all tendon and mean, dressed in PVC pants with eyeliner and filed teeth.

“He doesn’t look very friendly.”

“He isn’t. But don’t worry, I won’t let him hurt you too badly.”

Persephone smiled at her sweetly. “A wager?”

“What you got in mind?”

“Your coat.”

“Against what?”

“A kiss.”

The Mistress’ eyes widened. “You’re on!” She handed Persephone a weapon. “Be careful. There’s hardly any padding on it. You can easily get a bone broken.”

“Or break one.”

The Mistress stepped back. “We have PERSEPHONE! A newcomer! Hot! Versus MARROW! A veteran! Undefeated in the Dome! Two of them enter! Only one leaves! TWO OF THEM ENTER, ONLY ONE LEAVES!”

She began pounding the earth with her staff.

“TWO OF THEM ENTER, ONLY ONE LEAVES! TWO OF THEM ENTER, ONLY ONE LEAVES!”

The crowd was now shouting the refrain in unison.

Suddenly, the Mistress held up her staff. Silence reigned. Then she dropped it.

“FIGHT!” she screamed.

The two combatants flew together. They crashed into each other, Marrow trying for a poke, then a head butt, finally landing a viscous kick that Persephone barely managed to turn before he jumped away, spun in his harness, then slammed into the Dome back first, clinging effortlessly as a spider, one hand and two feet hooked over the steel bars.

He has done this before! Many times!

Marrow waved her forward with his bat. Now we shall see what we shall see. Persephone began running, flipping and bouncing, testing the limits of flight, cage and harness, memories of the Pit coming back full force. Case should be here for this! Her senses became heightened so that she could smell the blood and sweat of the hundreds who had come before, the clinging crowd a protean mass now screaming for the red.

Suddenly Marrow launched himself, expertly timing it so he would meet her just as she pushed herself off the cage. He swung hard but she’d already launched into a flip, ending up behind him where she used her body’s momentum to amplify her strike. Her bat hit him upside the head nicely, with that special sound of wood on bone.

Marrow howled and spun around, blood flying from the gash on the back of his head. His eyes found hers and he screamed something indecipherable, then launched himself across the Dome, first one end, then the other, gathering momentum. Gods this one has a hard skull! Persephone crouched in the center of the Dome, doing her best to look helpless. Marrow swooped in, body almost horizontal, waiting, waiting, then he swung but Persephone was ready. She sprang up on her powerful legs, the momentum leaching the power from his swing. Her legs then scissored around his hips, pinning his arms as she hammered down on his head again and again. They tumbled about, this way and that, Persephone checking her blows but making it look good. She finally halted their momentum and released her legs. Marrow staggered about, lightly concussed, woozy as a drunk at closing time, his head and face a flowing scarlet mask.

The Desert Rats rushed up to remove Marrow’s harness. Then Mistress appeared, planted a foot on his ass and propelled him into the dark. She knelt at Persephone’s feet, staff extended on the ground in front of her. Persephone rolled the staff with her foot, flipped it up and caught it. The she touched each of Mistress’ shoulders with the weapon.

“Rise!” she commanded. “What do you have to offer?”

Mistress meekly doffed her coat then stood defiant in her corset. She had a clean musculature and long legs and if truth be told, deserved a reward.

“Come here.” Persephone’s voice was a silken whip. She then grabbed the other girl around the waist and kissed her deeply.

Surprise gave way to lust and Mistress pressed herself against Persephone’s leg. Their tongues dueled for a moment, then Persephone broke off, nipping the other girl’s lip in parting. Mistress stepped back and wiped a hand across her bloody mouth, looking at Persephone as though she were Artemis landed.

“Who the fuck are you?” she said, her voice a throaty murmur.

Saxon had an erection that could break stone. He moved the two spears aside and stepped into the Dome.

“I challenge!” he called out.

He then peeled off his shirt and began walking the perimeter of the Dome, arms raised, exhorting the crowd.

Persephone watched him with admiration. He does have a talent for creating memories!

Clinging to the Dome, high above it all, Floria watched events unfold with such awe she was sure at any moment her heart would burst from her chest. My two heroes! About to fight it out! Could life get any better? She brought her camera to her face, framed the two combatants and took another photo. Then she carefully wiped the lens as Dino had taught her.

In the Dome, Saxon and Persephone had been separated and were now poised, bungees taut as bowstrings.

“TWO OF THEM ENTER, ONLY ONE LEAVES! TWO OF THEM ENTER, ONLY ONE LEAVES!”

Then silence. Mistress stood again between the two, staff raised, bare shoulders gleaming in the light.

“FIGHT!” she screamed.

Saxon and Persephone shot towards each other, now arrows, bats extended, bodies graceful as gymnasts. They swooped by each other, the bats like swords intersecting, then off they spun, each to another quadrant. Persephone’s white dress had ridden up, her white panties almost glowing at the juncture of her tanned thighs. So it went, bouncing, spinning, even the Desert Rats who ran the Dome had never seen it used to such effect.

Saxon and Persephone had eyes only for each other, for the bounce and flip, for the springing gravitational madness that was the Dome. Then Saxon swooped in, Persephone going low at the last second. Saxon touched a foot to the ground trying to trip her but Persephone instead swung her leg around and back, sweeping him off his feet. For a second Saxon hung fully upside down and could see Persephone’s inverted swing descending full force. To where it would land between his legs. He couldn’t move, inertially frozen, and braced himself for the nut shot to end all nut shots. At the last second, she checked her blow and lightly touched him there instead. Then she crouched by his upside-down head, one leg fully extended so her lips were beside his ear.

“Wouldn’t want to damage the goods,” she whispered, then kissed him on the cheek.

She stood and helped the Desert Rats right Saxon.

“Winner!” Mistress declared, extending her staff and anointing Persephone on a shoulder. More Desert Rats helped Persephone out of her harness, then one stepped forward and presented her with her wings. She put them back on. Mistress draped her duster over Persephone’s extended arms.

“That was fantastic!” Mistress enthused.

She looked over at Saxon’s chiseled torso. “And you! You’ve done this before, haven’t you.”

“First time.”

Mistress smiled. “Make way! Make way!” she cried, “Let’em out! Next combatants! Step lively now, ya lily-livered worms, step up, I say! Who has a coat for the Mistress?”

After reading book one in this series I was pleasantly surprised to find it went way beyond the usual generic romance novel. I was hoping to see more of this in the sequel and was not disappointed! It is still a love story with complex relationships, but in Hands of the Maker these characters encounter next level technology, extraordinary skills and physical abilities, and even other worldly forces. There is so much action and several mysteries emerging, yet the characters are very real and engaging. Many of them are also really funny and there's a wicked sense of humour underlying the dialog. I genuinely wanted to see them succeed and overcome their obstacles (I'm trying to be spoiler free here). I'm very much looking forward to seeing how Daniels ties everything together in the 3rd book.

This was a great read, and I did not see that ending coming! Daniels has a way with words and brings a lot of humor into a very sexy story. The relationship between Juliette and Saxon is so touching as it blossoms and then heats up. There is a very real connection between the characters and it made me wish I could hang out with them in real life- especially Maxine. I have rarely experienced such intriguing backstories for characters in a romance novel, with a fascinating mystery unfolding throughout. Looking forward to the next one!!!

Juliette Burns (27, daughter) was waiting in line with the others to test for the 1st. asst. fashion photography job at Saxon Studios. 500 had applied. Tony (Saxon Studios mgr.) would administer the final testing. Juliette Burns (27, daughter) introduced herself to Saxon Payne (Saxon Studios, famous photographer). Later, when Juliette was hired Saxon invited her to dinner & introduce her to Hervé Gallant (French, Luxaire et Fils president). The Romanov Tiara was being displayed in a photograph setting. Grace, Alderwood College of the Arts. Tony took Juliette to the Javier Vallmora (Spanish photographer) presentation. Saxon & 5 other asst. were attending also. Grace Banks (Daizu ad agency creative director) took Saxon’s portfolio & was admiring his photography. She critiqued them & handed him her business card. Prep room. Saxon & the others started to develop/form the Daizu. There were 15 smaller 16” x 20” prints. Later, what were Jack Burns (father, world famous photographer) & Saxon discussing? Ra Chi Chi restaurant/bar. Why did Juliette & Cassie meet with Maxine (hypnotist)? I do not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing free books from publishers & authors. Therefore, I am under no obligation to write a positive review, only an honest one. Warning: This book contains descriptive accounts of adult content expletive language &/or uncensored sexually explicit material which is only suitable for mature readers. It may be offensive or have potential adverse psychological effects on the reader. If you are especially sensitive to this type of material, it is strongly advised not to read any further. An awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very professionally written romance book. It was quite easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a huge description list of unique characters, settings, facts etc. to keep track of. This could also make another great romantic movie, or better yet a mini TV series. To be continued. I’m not real sure I got the whole story contnet, so I m going to only rate it at 3/5 stars.

Juliette arrived at Ra Chi Chi and knew immediately that she was underdressed. Of course this place would be formal, even for lunch. It’s Maxine! What were you thinking? To hell with it. I look fine.

She approached the maître d’s desk. He was an older man, bald and graying at the sides with a pencil mustache and expressive eyes that could not hide how much they had seen of the world. His posture was very erect, as though he still remembered his days in the French Foreign Legion. He wore a dapper vested suit of a gray gabardine, immaculately cut. He looked her up and down, taking in her attire but carefully betraying nothing.

“Mademoiselle. Bonjour. Do you have a reservation?”

“I’m meeting a friend. Maxine.”

“Ah!”

The most remarkable transformation came over his face and Juliette could see what the maître d’ must have looked like as a young man. He plucked a menu from a stack on his podium.

“Please. Follow me.”

Wow. Not a word about my jeans and t-shirt. As she followed the man, Juliette slowly became aware that she had entered another world. She could practically smell the money. The place was quite crowded but not loud though there appeared to be several animated conversations going on all around her. She looked up and saw that what she had first assumed to be some sort of art moderne sculpture was in fact a very cleverly disguised system of sound baffles. That must have cost a fortune!

“Ah. Here we are.”

They came upon a banquette that would normally seat four. Maxine was occupying it by herself. The model’s eyes lit up when she saw the other girl.

“Juliette! Ma chére! It has been far too long!”

She rushed around the table and kissed Juliette’s cheeks. Really kissed them. No air kisses! She must like me. Maxine was wearing a stunning little outfit in blues and yellows that should have been completely incongruous. Yet somehow Maxine made it work. Juliette guessed it was a runway one-off that the model had probably received as a gift from a designer – a very famous designer.

“My God, Maxine, is that a McQueen?”

“You have a very good eye, Juliette.” Maxine indicated the chair across from herself. “Please. Sit.” She smiled her tiny ‘wonder at the world’ smile. “It is funny, you know? And perhaps a little sad.”

“What is?”

Maxine indicated her dress. “Where all these wonderful creations end up.”

This was something Juliette had always been intensely curious about. “Where do they end up?”

“At a drycleaner. In Kuwait.”

“What? You must be kidding! How is that even possible?”

Maxine leaned forward. All she needs are a pair of white gloves. “Who do you think buys these dresses? Who do you think can afford them?”

Juliette was beginning to see where this was going. “The wives of rich Arabs.”

“Exactement. But face being what it is in the Arab world, a woman can only ever wear such a dress once. And after? What is she to do? Give it to the maid? Non. She sends it to the drycleaner…”

“… and never picks it up.” Juliette finished. “That’s unbelievable.”

“Here. Let me show you something.” Maxine reached into her purse and pulled out a tiny black and white photo. She passed it to Juliette. In the photo, a smiling, middle aged man, dark-skinned and balding with a black mustache was standing at a counter. Behind him, as far as the eye could see, were dresses. Hundreds and hundreds of dresses. All in clear oversized plastic dry-cleaning bags. Even though the photo was very small, Juliette could make out enough detail to understand what she is seeing.

“How did you get this?”

Maxine smiled and her teeth became briefly visible. “I took it. Let us just say that not all the dresses never get picked up.” She made an elegant gesture that took in the dress she was now wearing. Juliette laughed with delight.

My God she is stunning. Maxine was wearing just a hint of make-up, a light gloss on her lips. Juliette had seen many photographs of the other girl since they’d met at Saxon’s show. She was in awe of the model’s chameleon-like ability to embody the essence of whatever she was selling. She glanced over at the maître d’, who was looking at Maxine with the slightly starved expression of a dog hoping for a treat. Maxine graced him with le petite souiere, the tiniest of her many smiles.

“Thank-you, Pierre.”

“Avec plaisir, mademoiselle.” He looked to Juliette. “A drink, perhaps?”

Juliette glanced at Maxine. “She will have a kir. And I will have another.”

“Immediatement.” Pierre performed a small bow, then disappeared.

Maxine took a delicate sip of her drink. “Mmmm. You will like this, Juliette. So. How go things with Saxon? How many times have you fucked him?”

Juliette gave a choked cough. The other girl laughed coquettishly.

“Ah. You are blushing, Juliette. How delightful! He is such an extraordinary man, is he not?”

“Yes. Yes he is,” said Juliette, recovering.

“It is like a magic wand, no? But thicker, bigger, Saxon’s…”

“Yes,” Juliette interjected quickly. “A magic wand. I hadn’t quite thought of it that way.” She looked at Maxine very openly. “I… I’ve never been with anyone like that. Not even close.”

“Neither have I.”

Juliette was surprised.

“Ah, ma chére, pardon me for observing but you do not have very much experience of men, do you.”

“No. I don’t.”

Maxine took Juliette’s hands in her own, her thumbs gently rubbing their backs. “I have had, some would say, much experience of the world of men. Perhaps too much. And of women as well. Oh yes. Pleasure for me is… ” Maxine’s looked away wistfully. Then her eyes returned to Juliette’s. “A deep, deep experience that I never tire of exploring. And that was the problem with Saxon and I. He is not an endless pleasure, not a thing to be treated as one would treat a drug. I… did not know how to deal with that at the time. I still don’t, if truth be told. I could not let go of wanting more. Pleasure.”

The waiter arrived with Juliette’s kir. She took a sip and nodded her approval. Then she registered what the model had just said. “I don’t understand.”

Maxine sighed. “Saxon is perhaps the best lover I have ever known. And it is not only due to his physical attributes. It is mostly due to his empathy. He finds lovemaking far more draining than his partner. Because he gives of himself so completely. Unfortunately for the other, Saxon’s lovemaking quickly becomes a drug you cannot do without, and that you find yourself needing more and more of. Needless to say, a fragile thing such as a relationship cannot withstand this kind of pressure. So it ends.”

“Wow. I had no idea.”

“You already burn for him, don’t you.”

“Yes. But if what you say is true –“

“It is.”

“Then how can I wean myself off him?”

“By trying to see past the physical. By trying to connect with the man.”

“Is that what you did?”

“Yes. I somehow managed it. Now? I bear no more love for him than I would for a hamster.”

“A hamster?”

“Or perhaps a fish,” said the model with a straight face.

“Maxine, pardon me for saying this, but I believe you could not be more full of shit.”

Maxine laughed. “Ah, Juliette, I am, to use your English phrase, ‘busted’.”

“What is he searching for?”

“What are we all searching for?”

“Love?”

“Oui, ma chére. Now. Let us eat something.”

Juliette picked up her menu which was, of course, in French. With no translation. And no prices.

“I am in the mood for something light and fluffy. Perhaps the quiche.”

“Sounds good to me.”

Maxine gave a small nod to the waiter, who was hovering nearby, watching their table like a hawk on a thermal. He arrived before Juliette had set her menu down. He was young, extremely good-looking, and appeared to be very much smitten with Maxine. She began speaking to him in French, giving him her full attention, her laughter and décolletage. He left, thoroughly besotted. Maxine sighed.

“It is just too easy sometimes. Still, I cannot help myself.” She took a delicate sip of her kir. “Now Juliette, please, tell me what troubles you.”

Before Juliette could answer, another woman appeared at the side of the table.

“Maxine! I thought that was you!”

“Cassie. What a delightful surprise.” Maxine rolled her eyes at Juliette, indicating that in fact the exact opposite was true. Juliette remembered this creature from Saxon’s show. Today she wore a cream colored pair of pinstriped flared pants and a matching suit jacket. With nothing underneath. A small gold wristwatch and gold hoop earrings completed the ensemble. She wore it with an unconscious aplomb that made the androgyny of it even sexier.

Cassie sat down uninvited.

“I, like, saw you guys over there and something told me to not be shy and just come over and, like, join you. Tell you both about the most amazing thing that happened to me yesterday.”

“Cassie, did it not perhaps occur to you – “ Maxine searched the other girl’s uncomprehending features. “No. I can see that it did not. Well, then. Please. Tell us.”

“Well, see, it’s like this. I was hanging out with some friends at the Lee Goorm-and – “

“– Le Gourmand.”

“That’s what I said. Lee Goor-mand. We were having brunch when this girl and guy joined us. They were at the next table and, like, kind of just blended into our crowd.”

“Comme une infection vénérienne.”

“Yeah, yeah. That’s French, right? That one word almost sounds like ‘infection.’”

“Please continue.”

“So, like, I thought this guy was with the girl but it turned out they were just friends.”

“And how did you come to this conclusion?”

“He started hitting on me.”

“Ah! Oui! How could he resist the lure of la trou facile?”

“There you go again. Getting all French on me.”

Juliette could barely restrain her laughter. She glanced over at Maxine, who projected a stoic and saintly innocence.

“You’ll never guess what he does for a living,” Cassie continued.

“Is he perhaps an assassin?”

“Uh, no. That’s kind of weird that you’d even think that.”

“Apologies. Perhaps a lion tamer?”

“Well, no. He certainly wasn’t that.”

“Was he a fluffer?” inquired Juliette, all innocence.

Cassie turned to her with a frown. “That’s not funny, ya know? I am, like, aware of what that word means.”

Maxine stifled a giggle and came to Juliette’s rescue. “Please. Do not keep us in suspense. What was he?”

“A harpist.”

“Really.” Maxine had suddenly become interested. “How big were his hands?”

“Like catcher’s mitts.”

Maxine scooched forward and put her elbows on the table, her quiche quite forgotten. “What happened next?”

“Well, he asked me if I wanted to spend the day with him. Just wandering around New York. Show him the places that I loved.”

“So of course you did.”

“Well. He bought lunch and all.”

“For the whole table?”

“No. Just me.”

“Poor lamb. You may as well have had a bull’s-eye painted on your forehead.”

“I don’t get it.”

Maxine looked down at her plate, then back at Cassie. “My quiche is getting cold. Please go to the part where he invited you to his apartment.”

“How did you know he invited me to his apartment?”

Maxine waved a hand airily. “I have certain psychic abilities.”

“Really?”

Maxine batted her eyelashes, then lifted a morsel of quiche and placed it into her mouth. She waved her fork impatiently.

“So, like, he invited me back to his place which turned out to be this penthouse on Central Park West. It was un-be-lieve-able! It was so like, rich, ya know?”

“I have some inkling.”

Cassie looked momentarily confused. “Inkling? I didn’t know you did drugs, Maxine. It’s, like, a little early, isn’t it?”

“What?”

“And then he kissed you.” Juliette cut in.

“Yeah. It was dreamy,” sighed Cassie.

“And then?”

“Well, like, one thing kind of led to another and the next thing you know we were–

“– fucking –”

“– making love –”

“– like two rabid weasels in a heap of leaves,” Maxine finished.

“What? No! Like, like Daenerys and – and – what’s that cute guy’s name on Game?

“Jon.”

Cassie clapped her hands. “Yeah! Him!”

Maxine made a sound that reminded Juliette of Chimpy coughing up a hairball. The model quickly covered it by taking a loud slurp of her kir.

Cassie continued. “Well, there I was, naked, pressed against the glass, Central Park spread out below me –”

“With every drone in Manhattan hovering outside the window.” Juliette whispered. Maxine kicked her under the table.

“– and he was, like, doing me from behind.”

“What a filthy little piglet you are, Cassie,” Maxine murmured.

“What?”

“Rien, rien.”

“So then he like, pulled out, put his harp-hands on my ass, spread me, and then, like, slid this – this – thing into me!”

Maxine and Juliette wear leaning very close.

“What was it? A legume?” asked Maxine drily.

“Perhaps a mitten?”

“And I was so wet I took it all!”

“Whore,” mouthed Maxine, pretending shock.

“What?”

“More! More! I want to hear more!”

Cassie looked at Maxine uncertainly.

“So what happened next?” inquired Juliette.

Cassie tilted her head and blinked. “I, like, came, ya know?”

“No!”

“Yeah. I just came and came and came.” Cassie’s voice trailed off, face slack with sexual stupification.

“So where is he?”

“What?”

“Harpo! What happened to him?

“I dunno.”

“Did you not get his number?”

“Of course! Only, he must have punched it in wrong ‘cause when I called, some guy who wasn’t him answered.”

“Really?” Maxine had been examining her nails. She looked up. “Cassie, did it never occur to you that perhaps the harpist should have asked before inserting this, whatever it was –“

“A Lifelike Lover Classic TM. Just outta the fridge.”

“– into you?”

“Uh, no. Not really. I was in the moment. Is that, like, bad?”

“Shouldn’t he have asked your permission?”

Cassie huffed indignantly. “Well that woulda ruined my come, wouldn’t it.”

Juliette sat up. “I can see that.”

“Juliette, you are supposed to be helping here,” Maxine admonished.

“Sorry.”

“And Cassie? We have not even addressed perhaps the most important question you should have asked him.”

The model looked puzzled for a moment, as though pondering higher calculus. Then her face lit up. “How much does he make?”

“No! The question you should have asked him is where has this been?”

“Oh. You mean like, like,” Cassie’s lower lip began quivering, her eyes filling with tears, “you’re like saying that… that maybe I wasn’t the first? The first girl he did that to?”

There was a long pause before Maxine gave the most Gallic of shrugs. “This is a possibility.” Juliette was in awe. Her timing would shame Olivier!

“Oh my God. I am so naïve! Bruno always said I was too trusting.”

“Who’s Bruno?” Juliette whispered.

Maxine whispered back. “Cassie’s booker. A father figure to her. Or, well, I guess he would be if he wasn’t sleeping with her. Or perhaps he still is. A father figure. Things sometimes become confusing in this industry.” Juliette couldn’t tell if Maxine was joking or not. Something told her it was ‘not’.

Cassie was now weeping like a paid mourner at a Mafia funeral. “You hate me, don’t you Maxine.”

Maxine looked dumbfounded. “Why would you say that?”

“I – I just feel like you’re always making fun of me. Like you think I’m stupid or something.”

Maxine reached across the table and touched the other girl’s cheek. “Cassie, you are my dear friend! I only have some fun with you because you remind me so much of myself at your age.”

“I do?”

“Yes. I wanted to taste everything. Try everything.”

Maxine hesitated for an instant, then continued.

“We have had our moments, have we not? Do you remember when you ‘accidentally’ spilled coffee on me backstage when we were working that big show in Paris? That was a very hot coffee. I still have the burn.”

“I… yeah. That was me. And yeah, that was on purpose.”

“Why?”

“Jealousy.”

“At least you are honest. Do you remember what I did?”

“More like what you didn’t. You didn’t scream. That scared the crap out of me.”

Maxine gently released Cassie’s hand. “So if I sometimes have some fun with you, one could understand why, non?”

“Oui. On pourrait comprendre.”

Juliette stared at Cassie. Did she just speak French?

Maxine was stunned. “How long?”

“Since I was a child. My nanny was French.”

Cassie stood and came over to Maxine. She gently took Maxine’s chin between her thumb and forefinger, tilted the model’s head, then kissed her full on the lips.

“I’ve wanted to do that for a long time. I think I’m just a little bit in love with you, Max. Have been since the minute I set eyes on you. And nothing’s changed. Except maybe now it has. You know where to find me. Au revoir.”

With that, Cassie took her leave. She stalked away, unconsciously affecting her strange and startlingly runway walk, the one that had made her a fortune and that no model could duplicate. Maxine had tried very hard to learn it. To no avail.

“Holy shit,” Juliette breathed.

Maxine brushed a finger over her lower lip. Slowly. Thoughtfully. Then she smiled a new smile. One she had never smiled before.

“So, Juliette, what brings you here today?”

This book makes for a perfect vacation read. Fashion, demons, mind-control, love, passion and sex.. what more could you want in a beach book? The story is very original, so much so I am at loss to compare it to anything else I've ever read (maybe sci-fi romance novel meets Steven King?); it kept me reading, wondering what odd thing or idea might be presented next. My favourite thing about the book is the way Couto writes, everything from people to light is described in a way that makes you at feel like you could touch it. I am not often a fan of books that do this kind of thing, but its the WAY it's done is really very entertaining...the comparisons are sometimes so crazy and visceral I found myself laughing out loud... "a man with a face like chocolate suet", "walls that curved and ran like ridges in thick cream, slowly poured over the rusted crenellations of some long forgotten machine". These are not even close to the best ones. Next time through, I'm using a highlighter... some of the passages are worth repeating (and re-reading). The cover art gives you nothing to go on. I recommend you "look inside" and sample a few pages. Great fun.

It has taken me far too long to write a review for what was a clever and dynamic book. Daniel Couto takes us down a high gloss rabbit hole into a world of high fashion, martial arts, and fantasy. A world that could easily be our own. At the first "Solipsum" appears to be a fairly straightforward construct. Beautiful women, dashing romantic men, and we know the villain from the beginning. Or do we? Slowly, Couto begins twisting and twisting this world into implausible curves and twists culminating in a final showdown you will simply not see coming. For fans of horror and fantasy, of Steven King and of Neil Gaiman. A high octane must read!

Start reading this book with an open mindset because it starts challenging your perception of reality quite early on. Couto uses a very expressive and witty writing style that engages your fantasy trying to picture what is going on and why. It is clearly written from the perspective of someone who has an intimate working knowledge of the flashy world of photography/fashion and the gory sub-culture of greed and lust for new highs. He takes us to an alternative reality, close enough to be scary, where demons exploit the ugly sides of humanity brought to the forefront by raw consumerism. There are multiple levels to this story and some very unexpected turns which make it an awesome read. Once I got through the first chapter, I could not put it down until I had finished it.

I absolutely must recommend 'Solipsum' to everyone who is into horror, action, mystery, sci fi, fantasy, and/or erotica because this book has it all in spades. On my second read I still couldn't put it down. Couto has a gift for words that has you biting your nails, tearing up, and laughing out loud on a regular basis. Loved it!
